怎么又是你们??? It had been awhile since i last visited Thailand and we needed some culinary therapy to recover from the PTSD of Turkish food on our previous trip. So in July 2022, we decided “got gap” and booked a short vacation to Hat Yai, usually frequented by cheapo uncles and aunties to take advantage of the affordable massages and inexpensive good food. Wait.. that's us.
Little did we know that this would be the last time we felt even a tinge of hunger for the next 5 days.
My first time travelling to Hat Yai and i wasn’t sure if it would be a modern city like Bangkok or a third world kampung. Hey, at least their airport got air con.
We booked a Grab into town and began to worry that we would be sleeping in a hay stack that night. Lok cock would be an understatement.
But when we saw our chic looking hotel all was good in the world.
The first floor also doubled as a hipster cafe where we saw plenty of Thai cuties come to take instagram photos everyday.
Hao xiao the surrounding abit slum then suddenly got 1 chio hotel/cafe. It’s also only $63 per night and brand new so we were more than happy with our choice of accommodation. We quickly settled in and moved out for lunch as time was of the essence, because the faster we ate, the more meals we could squeeze in.
Our first meal is pad thai at ผัดไทยแหลมทอง, an eatery so local that it doesn't even have English romanization.
Savoury, sweet, sour, eggy, prawny, wok hei infused chewy glass noodles. The last time i had a good version of this dish was back when Thip Samai was still amazing and Jh looked a little gay, but this place does it so excellently that i regretted not getting a 2nd plate.
A perfect start to the trip, but now we only have 2 hours to digest before dinner. Hais.
We explored the bustling night market in front of Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel which is probably the most happening area in all of Hat Yai.
The entire place smelled like stinky feet because there were at least 5 stalls selling grilled squid.
Resisting the urge to try the street food, i bought a honey lemon beverage so potent that my voice almost became JJ Lin after drinking it.
I also boosted their economy by a grand total of $4 via purchasing crafts from a local artisan. #philanthropy
Check out my brand new DIY customised passport cover that can never be used because it is smaller than my passport.
In a blink of an eye, it was time for dinner. The pad thai earlier hasn’t even filtered into my small intestines.
God damn the curry crab is delicious, especially when you don't have to bother with shells to savour large nuggets of crab meat.
Thai omelette is always a must order for me, even if it contains more oil than the Middle East.
Fried garlic sotong also aroi mak.
Our staple was a mountain of crab fried rice which could have fed us for the remainder of the trip. 有必要来那么大份吗?
After taking care of our bellies, it was time to take care of some other parts of our body *wink wink*
I meant fingernails you dirty brained motherfucker. Because why cut your own nails like a peasant when you can live your best disabled life and get a siam bu to do it for you?
While i look over to the other side and Reagan is being served by 2 staff members like an absolute god. All i’m praying for is not to get robbed once we step out of the shop.
Would you like some cheese with that sir? With the aggressive way she was scrubbing my soles, i thought i was going to end up 5cm shorter.
GIVEAWAY ALERT ‼️ 🚨 Comment “YummyJSSkin” in the chatbox for a chance to win some dead skin bird's nest. *Blue towel not included*
All dolled up, it was time to wow the guys and gals at the hottest pub in Hat Yai.
Deafening music and fake titties all around you…you…you. Kurt Tay would have been proud.
However, we enjoyed listening to the live band, getting a tad tipsy and judging everyone who walked through the door that night.
We also got to hear a pretty good rendition of Sj’s 2nd favourite song. Long time blog readers would know which is the undoubted #1.
The day could not end without a visit to the convenience store for some snacks and water. A great start to a nua trip and it will only get lazier. You may have noticed that we failed to have supper today. That was a mistake on our part and we will definitely rectify the error by having 2 suppers tomorrow. Our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused.
- End of Day 1 -
