Japan Trip 2015 - Day 7: Arashiyama Bamboo Forest & Tenryuji Temple, Kyoto Station

Let it be known that i started writing this post straight after ending the previous post on April 2nd. Let's hope i won't be wishing you a Merry Christmas by the end of this one.

Due to running around naked outside in the middle of the night, we missed the sunrise again. At least we still have this final, beautiful morning view of Mt. Fuji. After reluctantly packing up and saying goodbyes to our luxurious and cosy cottage barn, headed down to the reception to see our cute auntie one last time :(

At least we got a picture of her with xiao jiabye. Your hospitality and kindness really made Kawaguchiko a memorable leg of the trip. Already missed your "hai hai!" as soon as we left. Would definitely upz you if you were younger.. hahas kidding... or am i?

Embarked on our bus journey from Kawaguchiko to Mishima JR Station, to take the high speed rail to Kyoto. The planning for the Fujikyu express bus tickets was hell as we had to time it perfectly with the bullet train reservation. What's more their call in customer service did not speak english, so it was basically "Ano bus ticketo how muchu onegashimas?" but sadly i couldn't figure out why she didn't understand me. Luckily Jl found a way to reserve them through her 'connections' and saved us a lot of time detouring. Nice one, 大姐大!

A 1 hr 45 mins direct bus to our destination SeemsGood

Enjoying our Mt. Fuji shaped onigiri bought from the souvenir shop

Some quality time to catch up on sleep... if only this guy wasn't sitting beside me and being active as fuck throughout the trip. 你够了ah. Every photo also must poh logo force me photoshop.

See what i had to do to Ck? All because you couldn't resist flashing hand signs like a xiao beng

Jl secretly telling us the length of Reagan's kkj

Almost there...

At Mishima Station to hunt for a quick bite before boarding our train

Even Kl's million watt smile won't make proposing at a bus stop work...

Not much choices for food, the bakery didn't appeal much so we took a chance on finding a bento shop on the platform.

Getting a little confused on how to use our reserved tickets to get through the gantry but a few samaritans helped us gaijins out. Arigato gozaimasu sugoi kimochi!

Most complicated reserved ticket of my life

Reminder to keep the ticket well as a conductor will come and check your ticket during the ride and you need it to exit the gantry as well.

Found the makeshift google maps that the kawaii owner drew for us to find the supermarket the day before, which i can confirm is pretty useless. But hey, at least she tried to help. Please come join us at "draw something" and maybe you will improve, noob.

Yc enjoying his bread on the platform. Train directions were stated clearly in english so everything from this point on was ez.

Final peek of the shy mountain hiding behind clouds

Found our lunchie, Japanese bentos which are so hyped back in SG.

They look so good and appetising that we couldn't wait to enjoy the best lunchboxes of our lives. Plenty of choices too so we tried to get different ones to review them. They don't come cheap though, being priced at between $10-$15.

Our train arrived. One thing to note is to wait at the correct section of your seat on the platform so you won't have to drag your luggage around the carriages.

Group pic before we feast on our exciting cai peng

Had no idea what this was but picked this as it said sushi and the cover looked kind of pretty. God was i wrong..

I had no idea what fish i was eating but it was sour and rubbery. Rice was hard and cold. Army rations taste better than this crap. But still it was better than Kl's leaf sushi bento which was hilarious as we had never seen rice and fish wrapped with random leaves. We didn't take a picture so with the power of google and the keywords "leaf sushi" and here's how it looked..

At least i didn't feel so bad with my bento after watching Kl struggle to down his leaf sushi. 10/10 would laugh again

The packaging makes them look so enticing to trick us into buying them. No wonder the stall got nobody buy except us.

At least this looks way better than some leaf sushi or sour fish

Pork slices bento. The general consensus was that besides looking pretty, they were cold and tasted shitty. You would be better off getting a sandwich from their convenience stores.

Reagan looking confused at his lu rou fan

Plenty of wtf is this shit faces while we had our lunch but it's ok. It's only fair to have 1 lousy meal out of so much good food we had indulged in.

Some videos for you of the journey to Kyoto

One last view of Mt. Fuji

With a snipe of Japanese office korkor at the end for god knows what reason

Sights and rivers

Catching up on some sleep on the 2 hour bullet train ride to the former capital city, Kyoto.

At Kyoto station, a city of old and new surrounded by mountains.

A parting shot of our fast dildo.

Searching for the exit to our subway line. Loads of souvenir shops around Kyoto JR Station so no need to worry if you forgot to get your colleagues some wasabi lip balm cause that's what my fucking colleague got for me. (someone pls take it off my hands)

Wasn't that far of a walk to the subway station but dragging our heavy luggages was a chore

Kyoto so advanced that they have muscle building exercises while you make your way from point A to B

10/10 biceps grew from lifting luggages up and down stairs

Finally reaching the gantry, we heaved a huge sigh of relief at the thought of resting our tired arms

BAM! more stairs because rest is for the weak

Snipe of the train conductor who makes sure nobody gets kiaped by the doors

Kyoto is like SG in a kind of way. It's actually a small city but there are many different subway lines in close proximity, we had to change trains just to get to somewhere 4 stops away. Karasuma Oike is one of the transfer stations to where our hotel was situated.

Sj telling us where his god is watching over him

And of course more fking stairs when we reached our stop. Jl bulldozing down the old uncle in style

They even saved the longest one for the last..

Finally reaching our hotel, Kyoto Royal Hotel & Spa. Like some sibei atas hotel but okok only la

Wefie while waiting for check in and Ck blur blur again

More selfies

Jl shared rooms with Yc and Ck while Reagan slept with us.

This picture here is our hotel tour for Kyoto. The room was so small that the tour would have ended in 1 minute anyway. A far cry from country cottage barn.

We were in a rush so after quickly settling down we headed out

It's 1 am and i'm cutting and pasting dog balls into my own hands... 当时不懂事

They have ice cream vending machines in their mrt stations. Soooooo awesome

Transferring subway at Nijo station on our way to the bamboo forest

Cold cold in Kyoto as well. Nice fresh air

A city within the mountains

Some train at Saga-Arashiyama station. Unfortunately the serene feel of the place was ruined by the sheer amount on tourists.

When in doubt of where to go, always look at the huge words sprayed on the road

A really nice and peaceful stroll towards the bamboo forest. Lots of old buildings that gives us an insight into their culture

Machiam go back 100 years ago

The flaberlet brothers

You know you're on the right track when the crowd starts kicking in

Corgi alert!

One of the entrances to the bamboo forest. Sibei happening

Addresses and signage engraved into stones

Somehow the photos here started to get blur

Don't disturb our romantic stroll pls

Who needs a selfie stick when you have Kl's long arms

More bamboos. Personally wasn't that amazed by bamboo, probably because i'm not a panda

Oh yea close up on that sexy man chest

Kl taking in the scents of a dead branch and being one with mother nature

Lots of carriage services which costs really steep (almost 100 an hour?) Quitting Fedex and going to Japan to pull carriages now! So des neh!

South entrance to Tenryuji temple deep within the bamboo grove

The entrance was closed, but it was a nice place to take pictures

Jh getting answers from the autumn leaves about which hero he should use to complete his quest

3 months together and going strong

Heading to the dense bamboo grove

Here we are at the famous bamboo place that keeps appearing on instagram

Our camera sucks in low light conditions so everything was blur blur from this point

Ow ow, Yc's samsung camera bo beh zhao

Tsk tsk got 不自动 people stand beside taking blur photos spoil the mood

It was getting late (only 4pm+) and we still had yet to visit Tenryuji temple, but we got distracted by the souvenir shops so we got delayed even later. No regrets.

There's something about walking along the roads in Kyoto that makes you feel that you went back in time.

Bustling, yet peaceful at the same time

At the main entrance of Tenryuji temple aka 天龙寺. One of the biggest feature is the monument of the best dota 2 support player in the world guarding the door.

Random girl doing the "you can't see me" pose to deny us sniping her

Chio autumn trees everywhere in the compound of the temple

Ultra close up of maple leaves to make you wet

Jap xmms snipe ke yi ma?

Whole life never see before autumn leaves so we spam take photos

This Ck hen ke ai

Wonder how the pond would have looked in spring with all the flowers in bloom

Semo colour also have

Sj giving no fucks about subtlety when beoing kimono girls. Namja.

Wah! 天使下凡!

Chey is only xiao jiabye

Finishing up with some souvenir shopping before we head back to central Kyoto for dinner

Discussing whether hard nipples is translated to nippuro harduro in japanese on the train back

Kyoto station, transport hub of Kyoto,

Big ass christmas tree in preparation of the holiday

Also an animated christmas tree sprayed on the stairs

People lepaking and paktoring on the colourful steps. Cool stuff

View from the stairs. Jin romantic 10/10 would bring 6 years here and paktor

We were like a pack of hungry ghosts looking for our first good meal of the day after that forgettable bento lunch. Heard good reviews about a ramen street in Kyoto station from google so we gave it a shot.

Kyoto Ramen Koji is located at the 10th floor and consolidates 8 different ramen restorans.

We split up to try the different stalls we wanted. Ck, Sj and i went for the stall with the cute waitress dipping ramen

Enjoy seeing the chefs skillfully doing their individual part, culminating in a yummy bowl of goodness

Any tsukemen from Fuunji in Shinjuku was always going to be a step down, but this was still pretty good. Gravy was more of oily and salty than the thick mee rebus style. And the marinated eggs are always on point.

Rest of the gang went to this stall for their ramen.

General feedback was that it was average. That's what you get for picking stalls without cute mei meis.

The christmas lights changing colours on our way down

Kyoto tower greeting us right outside the station. Didn't know this was a landmark of Kyoto so seeing it was a welcome surprise.

Close up view of the bright dildo

Found a Yodabashi which sells pretty much everything if you remember from an earlier post in Akihabara. An awesome place to waste hours of your time.

Modeling for Kl while the rest were looking at their watches since we didn't have much to shop for.

Went up to the Toys level and my god.. look at this whole stretch of gashapon machines selling everything from muscular kangaroo figurines to keychains of cat sushis

Kl looking suspicious as always, spinning more than 10 mini cactus as 伴手礼 for his ex colleagues while i got the gudetama keychains. They weren't cheap though, costing between 2 and 3 dollars for each spin.

Bag full of loots from the gashapon.

This arcade game is super hot in Japan that even uncles play it. Basically you control a female character, dance to earn points and win clothes to customize her. Yep sounds like dota 2.

Bonus video of shit we do while shopping. Ping pong show anyone?

We weren't all that satisfied or full from our ramen meal so we headed back to Kyoto station after shopping to the Cube, where a famous tonkatsu (pork cutlet) place was listed in our itinerary.

We arrived late so there was no queue and plenty of seats.

Incoming mini game of seeing who can grind the finest sesame seeds.

Undisputed winner is Kl's seasame seeds which he pounded into sand. Sibei fine but cannot pei pork cutlet eat in the end become useless.

Just nice after the competition, our freshly deep fried, thick slices of pork is served with mashed potato and thinly sliced cabbages.

The batter is light and crispy, and the meat inside tender and juicy beyond our imagination. They also provide several condiments on the table, free flow japanese barley rice and miso soup. If we weren't so full we might have emptied their rice bucket.

After a thoroughly enjoyable meal, time to head back to hotel and k.o. Attached above is a random painting.

But before taking the escalator down you have to get past this yakuza

Sad to see you go.. The world will never know a fiercer triad boss than you. RIP.

Got back to our hotel in a short while, check our this brolly dispensing machine. Too high tech for our primitive minds.

Information board indicating the autumn leaves status. Thumbs up man!

Just some of the tickets we foudn when emptying our pockets before washing up. Here's one from the Mt. Kachi Kachi ropeway.

Fuji Q highland entrance ticket

Bus ticket to Mishima Station from Kawaguchiko

It was fucking hot in the hotel as it was winter and there was no way to adjust the heater and turn on the air conditioner in this hotel room. Also, even though the air was cold outside, the windows cannot be opened wider than 5cm to prevent people from committing suicide. Never thought that being too warm would be a problem while we were there in December. But in Kl we have the most underrated, creative, perverted genius of the 21st century and he steps in to save the day...

...By converting the cold air outside through the 5cm opening into our hair blower to blow into our room. Much iq. Such clever. Wow. He also had to stand beside and hold the curtain so the air wouldn't be blocked.

This was a much better idea, amping and directing the air purifier to us using the laminated remote control instruction sheet. I'm happy to say this made us feel 5% cooler but laughing around at all the stupid ideas made me warmer overall by 50%. never a dull moment travelling with Kl. Off to bed looking forward to our next day in Kyoto. See you in the next post in 2017!
